A striking vintage Japanese shikishi (色紙) calligraphy print centred on the boldly brushed character 「妙」 (myō), a word carrying the sense of the wondrous, profound, subtle, or mysterious. Within the Buddhist tradition of the Lotus Sutra (妙法蓮華経), 妙 has particularly deep significance, expressing the profound and ineffable nature of the Dharma.

The original calligraphy is associated with Okamura Nissei (岡村日晴, 1882–1969), a Buddhist priest closely connected with Honno-ji (本能寺) in Kyoto. Historical records identify Okamura as a former head priest of Honno-ji and also as the founding head (iemoto) of the Isshō Honryū school of ikebana (華道一生本流), established in Kagawa in the early postwar period.

The enormous 妙 is rendered with sweeping, almost abstract brushstrokes, its long descending line giving the composition a wonderful sense of movement. Smaller inscriptions and red seals balance the powerful central character, creating the combination of spontaneity, discipline and empty space so characteristic of Japanese Buddhist calligraphy.

The original envelope further connects the work with Honno-ji, Nichiren Buddhism and the Isshō Honryū ikebana tradition, adding valuable historical context beyond the decorative appeal of the shikishi itself.
