This vintage 1990s–2000s shikishi print from Kasuga Taisha 春日大社. The red shrine stamp 春日神社 appears at the lower left, marking its connection to Kasuga Taisha, one of Nara’s most historic and important Shinto shrines.

The artwork depicts a cheerful white rabbit dressed in a bright red jacket and yellow trousers, giving the piece a humorous and nostalgic character. Unlike more traditional zodiac designs, this rabbit has a lively, alice in wonderland storybook-like charm, with expressive linework and a warm folk-art feeling. The soft speckled pink background adds a gentle festive atmosphere, making the piece both decorative and auspicious.

In Japanese zodiac symbolism, the rabbit / usagi 卯 is associated with gentleness, peace, cleverness, good relationships, fertility, and hopeful progress. Because rabbits leap forward, they are also seen as symbols of advancement and positive new beginnings. This cheerful design gives the traditional zodiac meaning a lighthearted and joyful expression.
