This vintage 90s shikishi print from Kasuga Taisha 春日大社 features a cheerful rooster family motif on a warm gold-toned shikishi board. The red shrine stamp 春日神社 appears at the lower left, marking its connection to Kasuga Taisha, one of Nara’s most historic and important Shinto shrines.

The artwork shows a pair of charming roosters with three small chicks, painted in a bright and playful folk style. Their rounded white bodies, vivid red combs, yellow chicks, and simple expressive faces give the piece a warm and nostalgic character. Above them is the calligraphy 寿, meaning longevity, celebration, and good fortune, adding an auspicious blessing to the composition.

In Japanese zodiac symbolism, the rooster / tori 酉 is associated with good timing, diligence, alertness, prosperity, and calling in the new morning. As roosters announce the dawn, they are also seen as symbols of brightness, renewal, and positive beginnings. The family scene gives this piece an additional feeling of harmony, protection, and household happiness.

This piece belongs to a 1990s zodiac shikishi series from Kasuga Taisha. Other zodiac animals from the same series are also available, though the full set of twelve years is not complete, so each piece is sold separately. Please feel free to contact me if you are looking for another zodiac animal from this series.
