This delightful shikishi print by Yoshioka Kōtarō 吉岡浩太郎 (1928–2016) captures the charm and symbolism of the Japanese zodiac through a warm and playful composition.

At the center is an ema (votive plaque) motif, illustrated in a folk-art style, featuring a pair of intertwined snakes—one in red and one in blue—facing each other with gentle expressions. The snakes are rendered with decorative patterns and soft colors, accompanied by seasonal elements such as bamboo and plum blossoms, symbols of resilience and renewal in Japanese culture. Above, bold calligraphy reads 「寿福」 (Jufuku), meaning “longevity and good fortune,” enhancing the auspicious theme of the work.

The imagery reflects the zodiac sign 巳 (snake), traditionally associated with wisdom, transformation, and prosperity, while the paired figures suggest harmony, protection, and balance. The ema format itself evokes the long-standing Japanese custom of offering wooden plaques at shrines with prayers and wishes, making this piece both decorative and symbolic.

Yoshioka Kōtarō was a well-known modern Japanese print artist celebrated for his approachable and decorative style, often blending traditional themes—such as zodiac animals, seasonal motifs, and auspicious symbols—with a contemporary sensibility. His works are widely appreciated for their clarity, warmth, and suitability for everyday display.

Bright, symbolic, and full of gentle charm, this artwork makes a wonderful seasonal display piece or a meaningful gift representing good fortune, harmony, and renewal.
