This expressive shikishi ink artwork is attributed to 河野太通 (Kōno Taitsū), a distinguished Rinzai Zen Buddhist priest and calligrapher, known for his powerful yet deeply intuitive brushwork.

The calligraphy itself is executed in strong, unrestrained brush movements, reflecting the Zen ideal of direct expression beyond formality. The phrase means from within—hinting at inner discipline, refinement, and the emergence of strength through practice, a theme closely aligned with Zen philosophy.

Balanced by the playful yet powerful animal motif, the composition achieves a harmony between spontaneity and intention, where each stroke feels both deliberate and alive. The red seal stamps (hanko) add a traditional finishing touch, enhancing its authenticity and visual contrast.

Kōno Taitsū (born 1930, Ōita Prefecture) is a prominent figure in modern Zen Buddhism. Ordained at Shōganji Temple at the age of 18, he later trained at Shōfukuji under the renowned Yamada Mumon Rōshi. In 2004, he became chief priest of Ryumonji Temple in Himeji, where he established the Ryumonji Zen Dojo. From 2010, he served as the 33rd chief priest of the Myōshinji branch of the Rinzai sect and as president of the All Japan Buddhist Association. As both a spiritual teacher and artist, he continues to lead monthly Mumeikai Zen gatherings. His works embody the essence of Zen—simple, immediate, and profoundly expressive.

Both spirited and contemplative, this artwork offers a compelling blend of calligraphy and figurative ink painting, making it a meaningful addition to any collection of Japanese Zen art or a striking decorative piece.
