This shikishi print artwork by Kōno Taitsū 河野太通, combining bold Zen calligraphy with a fluid ink depiction of a snake (hebi)—a motif rich in symbolism in Japanese culture, often associated with renewal, protection, and quiet strength.

The snake is rendered in soft, spontaneous brushwork, its coiled form suggesting movement and vitality while maintaining a sense of calm restraint. Above it, the dynamic calligraphy is executed with powerful, unhesitating strokes, reflecting the Zen ideal of direct expression and presence. The contrast between the free-flowing ink painting and the commanding characters creates a harmonious and engaging composition. Traditional red seal stamps (hanko) further enhance its classical aesthetic.

Kōno Taitsū is a distinguished Rinzai Zen Buddhist priest, artist, author, and humanitarian. Born in Ōita Prefecture in 1930, he was ordained at Shōganji Temple in Nakatsu at the age of 18. After graduating from Hanazono University in 1953, he entered intensive monastic training at Shōfukuji, Japan’s oldest Zen temple, under the revered Master Yamada Mumon Rōshi.

In 2004, he became chief priest of Ryumonji Temple in Himeji, establishing the Ryumonji Zen Dojo as a center of practice. From 2010, he served as the 33rd chief priest of the Myōshinji branch of the Rinzai sect and as president of the All Japan Buddhist Association. As both an artist and spiritual teacher, he continues to lead monthly Mumeikai Zen meetings, a tradition passed down from his teacher. His works embody the essence of Zen—simple, direct, and profoundly expressive.
