This elegant Zao-style kokeshi was created by Shūichi Umeki (梅木修一, 1929–2026), a highly respected craftsman from Yamagata Prefecture whose career bridged the worlds of both creative and traditional kokeshi. Although he initially specialized in producing wooden blanks for the growing post-war market of new-style kokeshi, his deep admiration for older regional traditions eventually led him to devote himself to preserving the classic forms of Yamagata kokeshi. Through decades of dedication, he became especially renowned for reviving the long-lost style of Okazaki Chōjirō, carefully reconstructing historic designs and ensuring their survival for future generations.

This piece beautifully embodies the gentle charm of the Zao Takayu tradition. The doll features a large rounded head with softly smiling eyes, delicately arched brows, and a small, finely painted mouth that radiates warmth and serenity. The hairstyle, framed by bold black side locks and accented with vivid red floral ornaments, creates a cheerful yet refined expression that is characteristic of Umeki's mature works.

Its slender cylindrical body is adorned with a striking arrangement of repeated vermilion blossoms, painted with confident yet graceful brushstrokes. The floral motifs wrap rhythmically around the figure, bringing a sense of harmony and movement while maintaining the understated elegance associated with traditional Zao kokeshi. The soft natural grain of the wood remains visible beneath the translucent pigments, enhancing the doll's warmth and handcrafted character.
