This Shingata Kokeshi (新型こけし) was created by Sasaki Katsumi (佐々木克己 / 佐々木克巳), an important maker associated with the creative kokeshi tradition of Shiroishi, Miyagi Prefecture.
The body is decorated in a classic palette of natural wood and black, with bold horizontal bands framing a central hand-painted floral motif. The simplicity of the design allows the grain and warm tone of the wood to remain visible, while the rhythmic black lines create a strong graphic quality. The oversized head and elongated body give the piece a particularly striking silhouette, characteristic of the inventive freedom found in post-war shingata and creative kokeshi.
Sasaki Katsumi was based in Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture, an important center for the development of Shingata Kokeshi, or new-style creative kokeshi. He began learning woodturning and painting in Shiroishi in 1948, later establishing his own workshop and developing a distinctive style that balanced traditional kokeshi techniques with more modern proportions and decorative expression.
He founded what is now known as the Sasaki Kokeshi Studio (佐々木こけし工房). The workshop continues today under the second generation, Sasaki Isao (佐々木功), together with his wife Miho, preserving the family’s tradition of handcrafted shingata kokeshi.
