A charming vintage Sōsaku Shingata Kokeshi handcrafted by Shunyō (春容), featuring a beautiful traditional Japanese motif of a sparrow and plum blossoms.
This wooden doll features a large, rounded head with delicately painted black hair, softly closed eyes, and a peaceful expression. Its slender, gently tapered body is decorated with an elegant hand-painted composition of white plum blossoms (梅) and a small sparrow (雀) resting among delicate branches. The warm brown wood and muted colours create a rustic, nostalgic appearance.
In Japanese culture, plum blossoms symbolise perseverance, renewal, and the arrival of spring, as they bloom despite the winter cold. Sparrows are traditionally associated with happiness, vitality, and everyday prosperity. Together, these motifs evoke the quiet beauty of nature and the changing seasons.
Unlike traditional regional kokeshi, which follow established forms, Sōsaku and Shingata Kokeshi allow artisans greater artistic freedom in their shapes, expressions, and decorative themes. This piece beautifully combines the simplicity of wooden folk craftsmanship with the poetic elegance of Japanese nature-inspired painting.
Condition: Vintage condition with visible signs of age, including surface wear, scratches, natural darkening of the wood, and fading of the painted decoration, contributing to its authentic vintage character.
