A distinctive vintage Sōsaku-style wooden doll depicting an ushō (鵜匠) made by artist Katsui (克意) , a traditional cormorant fisherman from the Nagara River (長良川) in Gifu Prefecture.
The figure is instantly recognizable by the tall pointed hat and dark traditional clothing, while the lower body is formed with bundled straw-like fibres to evoke the fisherman’s working attire. Beside him sits a small cormorant, attached by a cord, together with a wooden vessel-like form, creating a miniature scene inspired by the centuries-old practice of ukai (鵜飼).
Cormorant fishing on the Nagara River is one of Gifu’s most celebrated cultural traditions. During ukai, trained cormorants are guided from wooden boats at night while fishermen work by the light of burning torches. The practice has long been associated with the river and has become one of the best-known symbols of the region.
This piece combines turned wood, painted details, cord, and natural fibre, giving it a particularly handcrafted and sculptural character. The elongated body, simplified facial expression, and carefully assembled accessories place it close to the world of Sōsaku Kokeshi and post-war Japanese folk souvenir design.
