K20171 - Sosaku Kokeshi by Mineyama 峯山
This Sōsaku Kokeshi by Mineyama (峯山) comes from Shiobara (塩原), a historic hot-spring area in Tochigi Prefecture known for its mountain scenery, forests, and long tradition of regional woodcraft.
Its hairstyle is rendered in bold black areas against the warm natural wood, with a rounded dark crown that gives the head a distinctive graphic quality. The body is tall and cylindrical, finished in a deep brown-black tone that allows the natural grain and irregular character of the wood to remain visible.
One of the most distinctive details is the metallic cord wrapped around the middle of the body, forming a narrow decorative band. This simple addition creates a beautiful contrast between the dark textured wood and the fine linear ornament, while emphasizing the elongated proportions of the figure.
Unlike traditional kokeshi tied to specific regional lineages, Sōsaku Kokeshi developed during the 20th century as a more individual form of artistic expression. Makers experimented freely with shape, proportion, surface treatment and different materials, treating each doll as a small wooden sculpture rather than following a fixed inherited pattern.
Coming from Shiobara, an area long associated with hot-spring travel and mountain tourism, this piece also reflects the close relationship between creative kokeshi and the regional craft culture that flourished around Japan’s onsen towns during the Shōwa period.
