The natural wooden body is decorated with beautifully hand-painted red and white plum blossoms, accompanied by delicate green pine branches.
Plum blossoms hold a special place in Japanese culture, symbolising perseverance, renewal, hope, and the arrival of spring. Together with pine (Matsu / 松), which symbolises longevity and steadfastness, these motifs form an auspicious combination traditionally associated with happiness, prosperity, and good fortune.
Kōjō Tanaka was a distinguished Japanese creative kokeshi artisan and founder of Kōjō Kokeshi Kōbō (晃常こけし工房) in Yoshioka, Gunma Prefecture.
Known for his imaginative designs, elegant proportions, and expressive wooden craftsmanship, Tanaka developed a distinctive artistic style that combines traditional Japanese aesthetics with creative individuality.
His workshop continues its artistic legacy under the care of his son, Shigemi Tanaka (田中重美), preserving the family's dedication to Japanese kokeshi craftsmanship.
