This elegant Sōsaku Kokeshi was created by Sasayama Masue (笹山益惠) and distributed through Senshukai (千趣会), making it both a charming work of Japanese folk art and a meaningful piece of postwar Japanese cultural history.

The doll portrays a graceful young woman dressed in a traditional kimono featuring a beautifully painted floral apron panel in vivid yellow and crimson. Her softly smiling face is framed by a rounded hairstyle adorned with a decorative kanzashi hairpin, complete with a red ornament that adds a playful accent. The kimono's layered collar, obi, and subtle geometric patterns reflect the refined simplicity that characterizes Sasayama Masue's work, while the natural wood grain lends warmth and individuality to the piece.

This kokeshi was originally distributed through Senshukai's renowned "Kokeshi Distribution Club" (こけし頒布会), a pioneering subscription service introduced in the mid-1950s. Designed primarily for working women, the program offered affordable monthly deliveries of thoughtfully crafted kokeshi and Japanese folk art, allowing subscribers to build personal collections over time. These artistically designed dolls became immensely popular, transforming kokeshi collecting into a nationwide social phenomenon and helping establish a completely new model of mail-order retail in Japan.

The success of the Kokeshi Distribution Club played a foundational role in Senshukai's history and eventually led to the creation of its celebrated lifestyle brand, Belle Maison, now one of Japan's best-known mail-order companies.
