K10277 - Sōsaku Kokeshi of Nipopo Dolls ニポポ人形
A charming pair of Japanese vintage wooden dolls inspired by traditional Nipopo figures (ニポポ人形), featuring stylized carved faces, expressive details, and earthy colours accented with green and red.
Originating from the traditions of the Ainu people of northern Japan and Sakhalin, Nipopo means “little wooden child” or “doll” in the Ainu language. Traditionally regarded as protective charms, these figures symbolise good fortune, happiness, and protection against misfortune.
Nipopo dolls later became a celebrated folk craft of Abashiri, Hokkaido, particularly known for their hand-carved wooden forms.
This delightful pair combines the simplicity of Japanese Sōsaku Kokeshi with Nipopo-inspired folk aesthetics, making them a lovely addition to any collection of Japanese vintage dolls and traditional folk art.
