K10268 - Sosaku Kokeshi from Senshukai 千趣会
A charming vintage Sōsaku Kokeshi produced for Senshukai (千趣会), featuring an unusual bobble-head construction that gives the doll a playful sense of movement.
The kokeshi is dressed in a deep black kimono, accented with delicate pale blue and white details and a narrow red obi. The restrained palette and simple elongated silhouette give the piece a distinctly mid-century Japanese character, balancing the warmth of traditional folk craft with the more individualistic approach associated with postwar creative kokeshi.
This piece originates from Senshukai's famous “Kokeshi Distribution Club” (こけし頒布会), launched in the mid-1950s. At a time when mail-order shopping was still a relatively new concept in Japan, Senshukai introduced an innovative subscription system aimed particularly at working women. Members received affordable monthly selections of artistic household objects and traditional crafts, including creative kokeshi, allowing them to gradually build personal collections. The program became enormously popular and played an important role in the development of Senshukai and Japan's modern mail-order culture.
