RARE! A distinctive vintage Sōsaku Kokeshi (創作こけし) created in Satsuma-yaki (薩摩焼) ceramic by the artist Nishikō (錦紅), depicting a historical lord of the Satsuma Domain (薩摩藩主).

The figure is immediately recognizable by his impressive black battle helmet (kabuto 兜). Painted prominently on its front is the Shimazu family crest (島津家の家紋) — the famous maru-ni-jūmonji (丸に十文字), a cross enclosed within a circle. The Shimazu clan ruled the powerful Satsuma Domain in southern Kyūshū for centuries and played an important role in Japanese history, particularly during the final years of the Edo period and the Meiji Restoration.

The body is decorated in a refined palette characteristic of Japanese ceramic craftsmanship. A beautifully painted pine branch (松) stretches across the robe above stylized blue waves. Pine is an enduring symbol of longevity, resilience and steadfastness in Japanese culture, while the waves evoke the maritime landscape of Satsuma and southern Japan.

The figure’s serene closed eyes and tiny red lips contrast charmingly with the imposing samurai helmet, giving the work the gentle, poetic character associated with creative kokeshi. A golden braided cord tied beneath the chin adds another textural detail and reinforces the ceremonial appearance of the helmet.
