K10240 - Zao kokeshi by Yasumitsu Omiya 大宮安光
This vintage set of four Zao-style kokeshi was created by Ōmiya Yasumitsu (大宮安光, 1934– ), a respected artisan of the Zao Takayu tradition in Yamagata Prefecture. Born as the eldest son of the woodturner Ōmiya Anjirō, Yasumitsu grew up surrounded by the sounds and rhythms of the lathe. He began training under his father while still in high school, inheriting the techniques of the Zao lineage from an early age. After Anjirō's passing in 1952, he not only continued refining his own craftsmanship but also guided his younger brothers, Masayasu and Masataka, ensuring that the family's woodturning tradition endured. Although he initially specialized in producing blanks for creative kokeshi, from December 1967 onward he devoted himself to the creation of traditional kokeshi, establishing his own voice within the Zao style.
This delightful quartet beautifully captures the gentle simplicity for which Yasumitsu's works are admired. Each doll features the classic Zao expression: softly arched eyebrows, narrow smiling eyes, and a small delicately painted nose and mouth that convey warmth and quiet contentment. Their rounded heads, decorated with a neat topknot and side locks, evoke the innocence and charm of traditional village children.
The bodies are intentionally understated, adorned with faint hand-painted floral motifs in soft vermilion tones that have mellowed gracefully over time. Rather than elaborate decoration, the emphasis lies in the subtle individuality of each figure. Arranged together in graduated sizes, the four dolls create a harmonious family-like composition, highlighting the playful spirit and affectionate character often found in Zao kokeshi.
