RARE! This remarkable sōsaku kokeshi titled “風の神の圖” (Image of the Wind God) was created by the artisan Roshū (露秋), a maker associated with the souvenir craft traditions of Genbikei Gorge (厳美渓) in Iwate Prefecture. Both sculptural and narrative in character, the piece beautifully combines regional folk craftsmanship with the expressive creativity of the sōsaku kokeshi movement.

The doll features an elegant elongated silhouette topped with a delicately painted female face, calm and introspective in expression. The dark upper body is adorned with flowing wind-like brushwork and feather motifs, while the lower register presents a striking hand-drawn depiction of the Wind God (風神, Fujin) — the mythological deity of wind in Japanese folklore, traditionally portrayed as a wild supernatural figure commanding storms and air currents. The imagery evokes the dramatic movement of nature itself, creating a compelling contrast between serenity and elemental power.

An inscription on the reverse commemorates a pilgrimage visit to Takasaki Kannon (高崎観音) during the Shōwa era, further grounding the work within the culture of mid-century Japanese domestic travel and regional souvenir artistry.

Roshū was active primarily during the 1960s to 1980s, a period when Japan experienced a major tourism boom and travelers collected regional wooden dolls as cherished mementos of their journeys. His workshop was closely tied to Genbikei Gorge, a celebrated National Monument renowned for its rugged ravine landscape and scenic beauty. There, Roshū produced localized folk crafts for inns and souvenir shops, blending traditional woodworking with inventive artistic touches.

He became particularly known for his kubi-furi (首振り) or bobblehead-style kokeshi, using an inset joint mechanism in which the head rests loosely upon a hidden peg structure inside the body. This subtle movement gives his dolls a gentle lifelike quality, adding another layer of charm and craftsmanship to the work.
