K10215 - Omiyage Kokeshi from Izumo Taisha 出雲大社

K10215 - Omiyage Kokeshi from Izumo Taisha 出雲大社

This vintage omiyage kokeshi from Izumo Taisha (出雲大社) captures a playful and symbolic scene centered around sake and celebration. The composition features two hand-painted wooden kokeshi figures: a taller figure shaped as a sake bottle (tokkuri), adorned in rich red with delicate gold accents and a decorative tassel, and a smaller companion perched on a sakazuki (sake cup). Together, they rest upon a ceremonial sake dish written Longevity 寿.

Rendered in warm natural wood tones with traditional hand-painted facial expressions, both figures embody the gentle, serene charm typical of kokeshi craftsmanship. The stylized brushwork, soft smiles, and simple forms evoke a sense of nostalgia and folk warmth. The red and gold details on the larger figure suggest auspiciousness, prosperity, and celebration—fitting for its association with sake.

Originating from Izumo Taisha, one of Japan’s most ancient and spiritually significant shrines, this piece carries connotations of good fortune, harmonious relationships, and blessings—particularly as Izumo is famously linked to en-musubi (the tying of fateful connections).

As an omiyage (souvenir), this delightful set would have been treasured as both a keepsake and a symbolic object.
