This charming vintage Omiyage Kokeshi set comes from Nikkō (日光), Tochigi Prefecture, one of Japan’s most celebrated historic and scenic destinations. The pair was designed as a regional souvenir, with each doll incorporating imagery associated with the landscapes of Nikkō.
The first figure is painted with Shinkyō Bridge (神橋), whose name is written vertically on the body. The famous vermilion bridge spans the Daiya River near the entrance to Nikkō’s shrine area and has long been one of the most recognizable symbols of the town. Here it is rendered in miniature with a red bridge set against muted mountain scenery.
The second figure is decorated with a dramatic white waterfall surrounded by red, orange and green foliage, representing Kegon Falls (華厳滝), another of Nikkō’s best-known natural landmarks. The autumn colours are especially fitting for Nikkō, which has long been admired for its spectacular seasonal scenery.
Both dolls have rounded, gently smiling faces and unusually sculptural bodies made from sections of natural wood. Areas of bark have deliberately been left intact around the shoulders and bases, creating a rustic contrast between the rough exterior of the tree and the smoothly carved, painted surfaces. Small differences in shape and decoration give each figure an individual handmade character.
