FT620 - Sanbasō Dancer Clay Doll – Kuzubata 葛畑土人形
This folk clay doll depicts Sanbasō (三番叟), a traditional ceremonial dancer associated with good fortune, prosperity, longevity, and abundant harvests. The figure is reminiscent of Kuzubata clay dolls (葛畑土人形), a regional folk craft originating from Hyogo Prefecture, Japan.
The dancer is portrayed in a lively, expressive pose, dressed in a vivid cobalt-blue robe decorated with delicate golden-brown lines and yellow accents. His smiling white face is crowned with a tall black ceremonial hat, while one hand holds a ritual bell and the other rests near a white fan.
Sanbasō (三番叟) is a traditional dance performed in Japanese Noh and celebratory theatrical rituals, particularly as part of Okina. The dance is closely connected with prayers for fertility, agricultural abundance, peace, and prosperity. Sanbasō figures have long been appreciated as auspicious decorations, especially during New Year celebrations.
Kuzubata clay dolls (葛畑土人形) are traditional handmade folk figurines associated with the Kuzubata area of Yabu in Hyogo Prefecture. Made from moulded clay and decorated with colourful hand-painted details, these dolls reflect the warmth, simplicity, and regional character of Japanese mingei (folk art). Their subjects often include theatrical performers, auspicious figures, and characters from Japanese folklore.
