This charming vintage Kappa omiyage kokeshi set from Minakami Onsen (水上温泉) is a playful example of Shōwa-era Japanese souvenir craft, combining the traditional wooden kokeshi form with one of Japan’s best-known folkloric creatures.
The set consists of two kappa figures in different sizes, each turned from warm natural wood with a rounded, gourd-like body and a movable-looking head set on a narrow neck. Their wonderfully expressive faces feature large blue-ringed eyes, tiny noses and smiling mouths, giving each character a humorous and slightly mischievous personality.
Minakami Onsen located in Gunma Prefecture, Minakami is a mountainous hot-spring region surrounded by forests, valleys and abundant rivers. Its close relationship with flowing water makes the kappa motif especially fitting for a regional souvenir. During the Shōwa period, onsen towns throughout Japan produced an imaginative variety of locally themed wooden keepsakes for domestic travellers, often combining folklore, landscape imagery and playful craftsmanship.
Rather than traditional lineage kokeshi, these are best understood as regional omiyage kokeshi, created as whimsical travel souvenirs celebrating the character of Minakami Onsen.
