This playful vintage omiyage Kappa Kokeshi (河童こけし) combines two instantly recognizable elements of Japanese culture: the mischievous kappa of folklore and the distinctive form of a shōgi (将棋) chess piece.
This soldier in shōgi is the most numerous and simplest piece, moving only one square forward at a time. Because of this, it can be interpreted symbolically as steady progress, perseverance, and moving forward step by step.
Its rounded head depicts a kappa (河童), one of Japan’s best-known yōkai (妖怪), or supernatural creatures. Kappa are traditionally said to inhabit rivers, ponds and other waterways. They are usually depicted with a turtle-like or amphibious appearance and, most importantly, a dish-like depression called a sara (皿) on the top of the head, believed to hold the water that gives the creature its strength.
Here, the kappa is rendered in an especially charming and friendly way, with large circular eyes, a small beak-like mouth and a broad carved sara forming almost a hat around the top of its head. A touch of blue-green paint in the center further emphasizes this characteristic feature.
