This charming vintage Ittō-bori (一刀彫) carving depicts Yasha-ō (夜叉王), a legendary figure deeply associated with Shuzenji (修善寺) in Shizuoka Prefecture.
Shuzenji is famous not only for its historic hot springs but also for its centuries-old woodcraft tradition. Local artisans developed a distinctive style of carving using only a few bold knife cuts, allowing the natural grain of the wood and the sculptor's craftsmanship to remain visible. The figure portrays Yasha-ō, a character connected to the tragic romance surrounding Minamoto no Yoriie, the second shogun of the Kamakura period, who spent his final years in exile at Shuzenji. According to local legend, Yasha-ō later became the renowned warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune (Ushiwakamaru), making him an enduring symbol of courage, destiny, and the rich historical heritage of the Izu region. This carving depicts him seated while carving a small wooden figure, celebrating both the local legend and Shuzenji's long tradition of woodcraft.
