FT480 - Omiyage Kokeshi of 7 lucky gods 七福神
This delightful miniature folk craft depicts the Shichifukujin (七福神) – the Seven Lucky Gods of Japan gathered aboard a tiny Treasure Ship (Takarabune 宝船) shaped like a gourd (hyōtan 瓢箪). Hand-carved and painted in wood, each of the seven deities is represented as a charming miniature figure, while the vessel is crowned with a tasselled gourd-shaped lid bearing the auspicious character 福 (fuku), meaning “good fortune” or “blessings.”
The Seven Lucky Gods are among Japan’s most beloved symbols of prosperity and happiness. Together they represent wealth, longevity, wisdom, success, protection, good health, and abundant harvests. According to tradition, the gods sail into port aboard the Takarabune during the New Year, bringing good fortune for the year ahead. Images of the treasure ship have long been displayed in homes as talismans for luck and prosperity.
The inclusion of the gourd (hyōtan) adds another layer of symbolism. In Japanese folklore, gourds are regarded as protective charms that ward off misfortune while attracting abundance and good health. Because of their many seeds, they are also associated with fertility, growth, and the multiplication of blessings.
Beautifully handcrafted with the warm simplicity of traditional Japanese folk art, this piece combines several auspicious motifs into a single charming object. Whether displayed as a seasonal decoration, collected as a folk craft, or given as a meaningful gift, it embodies the timeless Japanese wish for happiness, prosperity, and harmonious living.
