This charming Fushimi Ningyō 伏見人形 figure represents the 富山古代犬 (Toyama Kodai-inu, ancient dog) a traditional folk motif associated with protection, loyalty, and good fortune. Originating from the historic workshops near 伏見稲荷大社 (Fushimi Inari Taisha) in Kyoto, this piece embodies the warmth and simplicity of one of Japan’s oldest folk craft traditions.

Hand-molded from clay and finished in soft white with hand-painted details, the dog features a friendly, expressive face with bright yellow eyes, a red collar, and black accents on the ears and tail. The slightly rounded, compact form and playful stance give it a gentle, approachable character typical of Fushimi dolls. A small seal on the body further attests to its origin.

Fushimi Ningyō have been produced since the Edo period and were originally sold as souvenirs to visitors of Fushimi Inari Shrine. Each figure carries symbolic meaning—this ancient dog motif is believed to ward off misfortune and protect the household, making it a thoughtful talisman as well as a decorative object.

With its rustic charm and cultural depth, this piece is perfect for collectors of Japanese folk art or anyone seeking a meaningful, handcrafted accent imbued with history and good wishes.
