FT441 - Folk Crafts of Wish-Making Oxen 願牛

FT441 - Folk Crafts of Wish-Making Oxen 願牛

This charming set of 願かけ牛 (Negai-kake Ushi – “Wish-Making Oxen”) is a traditional Japanese folk craft from Sasebo, Nagasaki, created as a heartfelt talisman for good fortune and fulfilled wishes.

The pair features two gently stylized oxen—one in vivid red and the other in deep black—each wrapped in decorative textile and bound with symbolic red-and-white cords. Their minimalist expressions and soft, rounded forms give them a warm, approachable character, while the fabric accents add a touch of festive elegance. The set is presented on a wooden base and comes with its original box and explanatory leaflet, enhancing its collectible appeal.

In Japanese folk belief, these oxen carry distinct meanings:

Red ox (赤牛): associated with hope, success, and the fulfillment of great wishes

Black ox (黒牛): believed to ward off misfortune and protect the household

According to the accompanying tradition, these figures are lovingly handmade—historically by young women—each one imbued with sincere prayers. They have long been cherished as auspicious gifts for life’s milestones, including marriage, new homes, academic success, and recovery from illness.

Size: 15 x 12 x 5cm
