This exceptional complete set of Eto Itto-bori (干支一刀彫) zodiac carvings from Kasuga Taisha (春日大社) represents the full cycle of the twelve animals of the Japanese zodiac, each rendered in the distinctive Nara tradition of itto-bori—a carving technique defined by bold, single-knife cuts and expressive simplicity.

Each figure is individually hand-carved from natural wood, showcasing the beauty of the grain and the artisan’s confident, sculptural approach. The animals—rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and boar—are stylized with charming character, balancing minimalism with lively personality.

Every figure is paired with its own inscribed wooden storage box, brush-marked with the corresponding zodiac character and shrine markings, and the full set is housed in a larger wooden case.

Originating from Kasuga Taisha, one of Nara’s most prestigious and ancient Shinto shrines, these carvings are rooted in ritual tradition. As noted in the accompanying leaflet, itto-bori zodiac figures are inspired by sacred offerings and are imbued with prayers for protection, prosperity, and harmony throughout the year.
