A charming vintage dorei (土鈴) clay bell from Kashihara Jingū (橿原神宮) in Nara Prefecture, modeled in the form of a gentle white rabbit (兎 / usagi).
The rabbit is rendered in a simple rounded shape with red ears and eyes, accented by bold circular motifs in gold and green. A traditional red-and-white braided cord is attached at the top, while a small red shrine seal-style mark decorates the side. The restrained colors and softly modeled form give the piece a warm, nostalgic folk-art character.
Kashihara Jingū, located in Kashihara, Nara, is an important Shinto shrine dedicated to Emperor Jimmu, traditionally regarded as Japan’s first emperor, together with Empress Hime-tatara-isuzu-hime. The shrine was established in 1890 near the area traditionally associated with Jimmu’s accession, giving it a particularly strong connection with stories of Japan’s imperial origins.
In Japanese culture, the rabbit is associated with gentleness, fertility, good fortune, and forward progress, partly because of its ability to leap energetically ahead. Rabbit motifs are therefore popular in seasonal ornaments and auspicious folk objects.
