A charming vintage dorei (土鈴) clay bell from Kyoto, decorated with a motif of Gozan no Okuribi (五山の送り火), one of the city’s most iconic summer traditions.
The bell has a softly rounded, mountain-like form with a pale cream surface, hand-painted with a night landscape and the glowing character 大 (Dai) on the mountainside. The scene refers to the famous bonfires lit on the mountains surrounding Kyoto each August during Obon, when ancestral spirits are believed to return temporarily to the world of the living.
Gozan no Okuribi, often called the “Five Mountain Send-Off Fires,” marks the end of the Obon season. Five large bonfires are lit in sequence across Kyoto’s surrounding hills, including the famous Daimonji (大文字). The fires symbolically guide the spirits of ancestors back to the other world, creating one of Kyoto’s most atmospheric and deeply rooted annual rituals.
As a dorei, this piece belongs to the Japanese tradition of small earthenware bells often made as regional souvenirs, seasonal keepsakes, and good-luck objects. Its simple painted decoration beautifully captures a very specific aspect of Kyoto’s cultural identity.
