This rustic hato (鳩 / pigeon) dorei clay bell is made in a simple suyaki (素焼) style, leaving the natural terracotta colour of the clay exposed rather than covering it with glaze or painted decoration.
The bird is modelled with a wonderfully understated folk-art character: a rounded body, small head, gently curved back and incised lines indicating the wings and tail feathers. Its warm reddish-brown surface and minimal detailing emphasize the handmade quality of the piece, while a braided cord threaded through the top allows it to be hung or displayed.
In Japan, the hato (鳩) has long been regarded as an auspicious bird. It is particularly associated with peace, harmony and good fortune, and also has an important connection with Hachiman shrines, where the dove is traditionally regarded as a sacred messenger of the deity Hachiman. For this reason, dove motifs frequently appear in shrine-related folk crafts, charms and regional souvenirs.
As a dorei (土鈴), the piece also belongs to Japan’s long tradition of earthenware bells. Their gentle, earthy sound has historically been associated with protection and the warding away of misfortune, while later examples became popular as regional folk toys and travel keepsakes.
The unglazed suyaki finish gives this bell a particularly natural and timeless appearance, allowing the texture of the clay and the simple sculptural form to take centre stage.
