This charming dragon dorei clay bell from Nishinomiya Shrine (西宮神社) was crafted by Yakushigama (薬師窯), a kiln celebrated for preserving the warmth and spirit of traditional Japanese folk ceramics for over a thousand years.

Formed in a soft, rounded silhouette, the white dragon carries a gentle and auspicious expression rather than a fierce appearance, reflecting the approachable charm often found in Japanese folk art. The body is adorned with the red seal of 西宮神社, one of Japan’s most important shrines dedicated to Ebisu, the deity of prosperity, commerce, and good fortune. The accompanying wooden plaque reads 招福干支 (“Lucky Zodiac”), emphasizing its role as a symbolic talisman for blessings and protection.

In Japanese tradition, dragons are revered as sacred creatures associated with water, strength, wisdom, and the flow of good fortune. As a dorei bell, this piece combines those auspicious meanings with the calming sound traditionally believed to purify spaces and ward off misfortune.

Handcrafted with the quiet simplicity characteristic of Yakushigama works, this dragon bell is both a meaningful shrine souvenir and a delightful example of modern Japanese mingei-inspired craftsmanship.
