CB263 - Dorei Clay Bell from Ise Jingū 伊勢神宮
This vintage dragon-shaped 五十鈴 (Isuzu) dorei clay bell from Ise Jingū (伊勢神宮) carries the quiet spiritual atmosphere of one of Japan’s most sacred Shinto shrines. Crafted in an unglazed earthenware style, the piece features a stylized dragon resting upon a rounded bell form, decorated with subtle carved cloud motifs and the character 「神宮」(Jingū), referencing the revered Grand Shrine of Ise.
Named after the Isuzu River (五十鈴川) that flows through the sacred grounds of Ise Jingū, this dorei reflects the shrine’s deep connection to purification, nature, and spiritual harmony. In Japanese tradition, the dragon symbolizes strength, protection, wisdom, and the bringing of rain and prosperity. Combined with the symbolism of the dorei, it becomes a meaningful talisman believed to ward off misfortune and invite good fortune.
Unlike brightly painted folk bells, this piece retains a simple terracotta finish that highlights the warmth of the clay and the understated beauty of traditional shrine crafts. The soft sound produced when shaken evokes the calming resonance associated with Shinto ritual objects and sacred spaces.
