CB251 - Dorei Clay Bell from Ise Jingū 伊勢神宮
This Isuzu dorei clay bell 五十鈴 from Ise Jingū (伊勢神宮) is a charming example of traditional shrine craft, shaped in the form of a rooster (酉)—one of the twelve zodiac animals. Hand-molded in unglazed clay, the piece retains its warm, natural earthen tone, giving it a grounded and timeless presence.
The figure is compact and softly rounded, with a stylized comb, beak, and elegantly curled tail that adds a sense of movement to its otherwise simple form. A white cord is threaded through the top, allowing it to be hung as a protective charm. The accompanying box, marked with calligraphy referencing the zodiac year, reinforces its role as a talisman tied to the cycle of time and seasonal renewal.
Named after the sacred Isuzu River (五十鈴川) that flows through the grounds of Ise Jingū, these bells carry deep spiritual meaning. The gentle sound produced when moved is believed to purify the surroundings, dispel misfortune, and invite divine protection, echoing the use of bells in Shinto ritual practice.
In Japanese symbolism, the rooster represents vigilance, renewal, and the arrival of light, as it heralds the dawn. It is also associated with protection and the dispelling of darkness, making it a meaningful motif for a shrine bell.
Attention: The unrefined clay surface, subtle hand-formed irregularities, and natural wear, including a small crack on the top.
