A fascinating vintage Japanese book collection titled 郷土玩具 (Kyōdo Gangu – Japanese Folk Toys), published by Yomiuri Shimbunsha (読売新聞社) in 1969 (Shōwa 44). This complete three-volume set explores the rich history, craftsmanship, and regional traditions of Japanese folk toys, offering a valuable visual and cultural reference for collectors and enthusiasts of Japanese mingei (folk art).

The books were compiled by Makino Gantarō (牧野玩太郎) and Inada Toshiyuki (稲田年行), with photography by Kajihara Kazuo (梶原和夫).

Each volume focuses on a different traditional material used in Japanese folk toy production:

Volume 1 – 紙 (Kami / Paper): Explores traditional Japanese paper-based folk toys, including papier-mâché (hariko) figures, decorative masks, and colourful handcrafted objects associated with regional festivals and celebrations.

Volume 2 – 木 (Ki / Wood): Dedicated to wooden folk toys, featuring traditional woodcarving, regional wooden figures, and other handcrafted toys that reflect Japan's longstanding woodworking traditions.

Volume 3 – 土 (Tsuchi / Clay): Examines traditional Japanese clay folk toys, including tsuchi ningyō (clay dolls), decorative figurines, and regional earthenware creations.

Japanese folk toys, known as kyōdo gangu (郷土玩具), are deeply connected to local customs, religious beliefs, seasonal festivals, and everyday life. Many were traditionally created as protective charms, symbols of good fortune, or gifts for children. Their distinctive forms, colours, and craftsmanship reflect the cultural identity of different regions throughout Japan.
