The face is especially expressive, with finely painted brows, narrow eyes, a long central nose, and a small red mouth. The bold black hair frames the face in a distinctive traditional style.

The body is decorated with vivid red floral motifs arranged in vertical groups, separated by fine horizontal bands. The restrained palette of natural wood, black, and red gives the piece a classic and highly graphic appearance while preserving the rustic warmth associated with Hijiori kokeshi.

Juunosuke Sato was born in Hijiori, Yamagata Prefecture, in 1930, into a family connected with woodworking. He learned traditional woodturning techniques from his uncle, Sato Minosuke, including methods using both the standard lathe and the daraiban. From the 1960s onward, he devoted increasing attention to kokeshi making, and his earlier works in particular became admired for their direct, unpretentious character and strong connection to older Hijiori forms.

Although he initially worked as a part-time craftsman, Sato developed a distinctive body of work that is now appreciated by collectors for its individuality and fidelity to the Hijiori tradition. He passed away in 1997, leaving behind a comparatively limited but highly recognizable legacy.

Size: 10 x 10 x 35cm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0964/9746/7723/files/Cover_259ae483-b42e-486c-8abc-233e0249b157.jpg?v=1791004877
https://maisonkyo.be/products/k35023-traditional-hijiori-kokeshi-by-juunosuke-sato-%e4%bd%90%e8%97%a4%e9%87%8d%e4%b9%8b%e5%8a%a9
