The custom developed from pilgrimages to shrines dedicated to the protection of horses, where farmers brought their animals to give thanks for their labour and pray for their health and well-being. Today, magnificently decorated horses process approximately 14 km from Onikoshi Sōzen Shrine in Takizawa to Morioka Hachimangū, their many bells producing the characteristic chagu-chagu sound from which the festival takes its name. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe colourful horse trappings are traditionally associated with konida shōzoku (小荷駄装束), decorative horse equipment whose form is connected with the packhorses once seen in feudal processions.
