In Japanese folk belief, the hearth was regarded as the heart of the household, and its protective spirit was associated with fire, food, family wellbeing and the prosperity of the home.

This expressive figure has a wonderfully primitive, handmade character, with exaggerated round eyes, a prominent mouth and vivid layers of green, yellow, red and blue pigment. A bundle of natural straw rises from the top of the head, while a simple braided cord at the back reinforces its rustic, vernacular quality.

Kamado-gami traditions vary by region, but such figures were traditionally placed near the kitchen hearth or cooking area as protective talismans, watching over the household and helping guard against fire and misfortune. Their deliberately powerful or unusual faces reflect an old folk belief that a strong supernatural presence could repel harmful influences.

The irregular modelling, visible brushwork and naturally aged surface give this piece a particularly authentic mingei (民藝) character. Rather than refined decoration, its beauty lies in its directness, individuality and connection to everyday spiritual life in rural Japan.

Size: 7 x 5 x 10cm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0964/9746/7723/files/Cover_ac36a53c-9911-499d-ab4a-c5f6133394de.jpg?v=1791044554
https://maisonkyo.be/products/ft595-vintage-kamado-gami-folk-craft-%e3%81%8b%e3%81%be%e3%81%a9%e7%a5%9e
