A striking vintage ceramic empty bottle from Okinawa (琉球), produced for Kamiya Shuzōjo (神谷酒造所). Designed as a decorative souvenir object, the bottle features an impressive three-dimensional dragon-head motif associated with Shuri Castle (首里城) and the visual culture of the former Ryukyu Kingdom.
The heavily sculpted ceramic body is finished in a warm earthy beige-brown glaze, with raised scales, flowing whiskers and expressive dragon features giving the piece a wonderfully tactile folk-craft character. Dragons are particularly prominent in the decoration of Shuri Castle; the royal Seiden incorporated golden dragons and distinctive dragon pillars, reflecting the castle's role as the political and ceremonial heart of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
Kamiya Shuzōjo was founded in 1949 in Higashikazehira (東風平) and remains a small family-operated Okinawan distillery. The brewery relocated to its present site in 2004; as this bottle still carries the earlier 東風平町字東風平1421 address, it likely predates that relocation.
Now empty, it makes a highly decorative Okinawan vintage display piece (置物) and an unusual collectible for lovers of Ryukyu culture, Japanese folk art, vintage sake and awamori bottles.
