TB413 - Karatsu-yaki Tea Cup 唐津焼
TB413 - Karatsu-yaki Tea Cup 唐津焼
Vintage item, never used. A beautifully expressive vintage Karatsu-yaki 唐津焼 tea cup, decorated in the E-Karatsu 絵唐津 tradition with bold motif.
The cup has a tall, softly cylindrical form with a gently irregular profile, reflecting the relaxed handmade character associated with Karatsu ware. Its warm grey-beige glaze is covered with a fine network of kannyū (貫入) crackling, giving the surface a richly textured, aged appearance.
The painting is deliberately free and energetic rather than precisely outlined, allowing the movement of the brush to remain visible. This expressive approach is characteristic of E-Karatsu, where simple motifs are traditionally painted directly onto the clay before glazing.
Karatsu-yaki (唐津焼) developed in the Hizen region of present-day Saga and northern Nagasaki and became deeply connected with Japanese tea culture. Its earthy clay, restrained decoration and natural firing effects embody the spirit of wabi-sabi (侘寂)—an appreciation for simplicity, irregularity and the beauty of materials shaped by hand and fire.
A characterful piece for enjoying sencha, bancha or hōjicha, and equally appealing as a collectible example of traditional Japanese tea ware.
