This is a beautiful vintage Hagi-yaki chawan matcha bowl 萩焼 茶碗, made for Japanese tea ceremony.

The bowl has a soft rounded form with a calm, generous presence in the hands. Its glaze shows the gentle beauty typical of Hagi ware, with pale grey-white tones blended with warm pink and soft peach blushes. The surface has natural speckles, subtle crackle, and flowing kiln effects, giving the bowl an organic and quietly expressive appearance.

The foot ring is left mostly unglazed, showing the warm clay body and handmade trimming marks. The contrast between the soft glazed body and the earthy foot gives the piece a very natural wabi-sabi character. The original storage box is included and shows age-related wear.

Hagi-yaki 萩焼 is a traditional ceramic ware from Yamaguchi Prefecture, highly appreciated in Japanese tea culture. It is known for its soft clay, warm glaze, gentle texture, and natural variations created during firing. One of the special charms of Hagi ware is called “Hagi no nanabake” 萩の七化け, meaning the “seven transformations of Hagi,” referring to how the glaze can gradually change and deepen through use as tea enters the fine crackle.

This chawan is suitable for preparing matcha, tea ceremony practice, display, or as a collectible piece of Japanese pottery. Its soft colours and natural glaze movement make it a lovely example of Hagi-yaki aesthetics.

A beautiful item for collectors of Japanese tea ceremony utensils, Hagi ware, or vintage handmade ceramics.
