K25154 - Traditional Naruko by Hideo Onuma 大沼秀雄
This Naruko kokeshi by Hideo Onuma 大沼秀雄 (1930–2023) is a refined example of the understated elegance and lineage-based craftsmanship of the Onuma family tradition.
The doll features a gently rounded head with a calm, softly smiling expression. The face is delicately drawn with fine, slightly arched eyebrows, narrow eyes, and a small curved mouth, conveying a quiet warmth typical of Naruko kokeshi. The hair is rendered in bold black brushwork, forming a simple triangular fringe and side locks, emphasizing clarity and restraint in design.
The body is tall and cylindrical with a smooth, unadorned surface, finished in warm reddish tones that highlight the natural grain of the wood. Unlike more decorative examples, this piece is intentionally minimal, with no floral motifs—allowing the craftsmanship of the turning and the subtle gradation of color to take center stage. A faint red band at the base adds a gentle accent while maintaining the overall simplicity.
Born on February 18, 1930, Hideo Onuma was the second son of Takeo Onuma of Naruko. After losing his father at a young age, he trained under Seikichi Okazaki from 1946, spending five years as an apprentice and continuing as a craftsman in the Okazaki workshop until 1958. After becoming independent, he began painting kokeshi under the guidance of his mother, Mitsuo, thus inheriting both technical and familial traditions.
Deeply connected to the Iwataro Onuma lineage, Hideo maintained a faithful adherence to traditional Naruko forms throughout his life. In 1967, he opened his own kokeshi shop in Naruko, continuing production for decades and passing the craft to the next generation, including his son Hideaki.
