K25124 - Naruko Kokeshi by Shoji Sakurai 桜井昭二
This Naruko-style kokeshi was crafted by Shoji Sakurai (桜井昭二, 1927–2011), a master artisan who played a vital role in sustaining and evolving the postwar kokeshi tradition in Naruko.
Born on January 1, 1927, Shoji was the eldest son of the esteemed craftsman Mannojo Sakurai. He began painting kokeshi in his early teens under the guidance of his mother, Kou. Deeply rooted in the Naruko tradition, Shoji carried forward the family’s legacy while also mentoring the next generation of craftsmen, including Igarashi Isamu, Yusa Yasuo, and his own son Akihiro.
This piece showcases the classic traits of Naruko kokeshi: a rounded head with straight bangs and side hair painted in bold strokes, and a body adorned with finely brushed chrysanthemum motifs in vivid reds and deep greens. The rich floral design and gently flared body give this doll a dignified yet warm presence.
Shoji was active throughout his life, even demonstrating his skills on the foot-powered lathe just months before his passing in 2011. This doll stands as a testament to his lifelong dedication and artistry within the world of traditional kokeshi.
