This is Yajirō-style kokeshi crafted by Yoshinori Niyama (新山吉紀, b. 1960), a third-generation kokeshi artisan from Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture. Trained by his father, the respected craftsman Yoshitaro Niyama, Yoshinori began woodturning in his youth and fully dedicated himself to the art of kokeshi-making in 1980. His workshop is located within the well-known Yajirō Kokeshi Village, a hub of traditional doll-making.
This piece features the classic traits of the Yajirō tradition — a tall, narrow form, a high-set rounded head, and a vividly painted body. The doll’s cheerful expression is framed by twin side tufts of hair, and the face is accented with fine brushwork. What sets this kokeshi apart is its bold color palette, including a rare use of teal green and violet alongside traditional red and black. The body is adorned with concentric stripes and stylized floral or geometric motifs, adding a dynamic and festive presence.
Yoshinori’s work continues to reflect the enduring legacy of the Niyama family, blending playful design with masterful craftsmanship, making this kokeshi a vibrant example of living folk art.
