K25078 - Yajirō Kokeshi by Yoshinori Niyama 新山吉紀
This traditional Yajirō-style kokeshi was handcrafted by Yoshinori Niyama, a third-generation artisan from Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture. Born in 1960, Niyama began learning woodcarving under the guidance of his father, Yoshitaro, around 1974 and committed himself fully to kokeshi-making in 1980.
The doll features the distinctive attributes of the Yajirō lineage, including a tall, narrow body, broad circular head, and a cheerful, wide-eyed expression framed with red headband details. The bold use of crimson and green vegetal motifs around the body reflects the hallmark of Yajirō tradition — bright, festive colors and rhythmic brushwork.
Yoshinori's work blends generational craftsmanship with the joyful, folkloric spirit of northern Japan. He continues to produce kokeshi at Yajirō Kokeshi Village, where he works alongside his wife Mayumi and their son Shota, who represents the fourth generation of this enduring family craft.
