Elegant in its simplicity, the doll reflects the gentle warmth and refined balance characteristic of the Togatta tradition.

The piece features a slender cylindrical body adorned with stylized red chrysanthemum-like floral motifs arranged vertically along the natural wood surface. The restrained decoration allows the beautiful grain of the wood to remain visible, giving the kokeshi a soft, organic presence. The face is painted with delicately arched eyes, a fine linear nose, and a small smiling mouth, creating a serene and welcoming expression. The softly rendered red hair ornamentation framing the crown adds movement and charm while maintaining the understated elegance associated with traditional Togatta kokeshi.

Kyuichi Omori was born in Shiroishi City in 1932 and initially worked in mountain labor and farming before turning to woodworking in 1953 under Ono Kozaburo Shoten. Drawn to woodturning for its stability and year-round nature, he steadily developed his technical skill and became independent in 1959. Although he first engaged in newer forms of woodturning, he became deeply fascinated by traditional kokeshi around 1964 during the growing folk craft revival movement in Japan. Under the guidance of Tetsuro Sato, he studied the painting and aesthetics of traditional kokeshi, eventually establishing his own workshop in Togatta Onsen.

Omori’s works are appreciated for their sincerity and careful craftsmanship, blending traditional Togatta sensibilities with the warmth of handmade folk objects. He also passed his woodworking knowledge on to his eldest son, Hisayuki, continuing the family connection to the craft. Until his passing in 2015, he remained dedicated to producing kokeshi that honored the spirit of the region’s long artistic heritage.

Size: 6 x 6 x 21cm

More works by Kyuichi Omori 大森久一

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0964/9746/7723/files/temple_a4b51328-7b38-4fc7-9a7c-8414c8601894.jpg?v=1780053154
https://maisonkyo.be/fr/products/k20157-togatta-by-kyuichi-omori-%e5%a4%a7%e6%a3%ae%e4%b9%85%e4%b8%80
