This striking pair of vintage Sōsaku Kokeshi 創作こけし is inspired by Nipopo Dolls ニポポ人形, a well-known folk craft associated with Abashiri, Hokkaidō.
Traditionally carved from wood, Nipopo figures are rooted in the culture of northern Japan and are generally understood as protective, good-luck dolls. Their distinctive appearance — strongly carved facial features, compact bodies, and bold geometric ornament — gives them a powerful presence quite different from the softer forms of many other Japanese kokeshi.
This pair depicts a male and female figure, each carved in a highly stylised manner. The deep brown and black finish emphasizes the sculptural cuts of the faces, clothing, and hair, while incised geometric motifs decorate the bodies. The male figure is distinguished by a prominent carved beard, while the female figure has a smoother face and more rounded coiffure.
The strong angular carving and restrained colour palette give these dolls an almost architectural quality, combining the decorative appeal of Sōsaku Kokeshi with the visual language of Hokkaidō folk craft.
