K10270 - Omiyage Kokeshi Fukutokkuri 福徳利
A vintage Omiyage Kokeshi known as Fukutokkuri (福徳利), originating from the Tōhoku region of northern Japan, an area renowned for its rich tradition of wooden folk crafts and kokeshi dolls.
The name Fukutokkuri combines Fuku (福), meaning good fortune or happiness, with Tokkuri (徳利), a traditional Japanese sake flask. This delightful creation brings together the cheerful appearance of a kokeshi doll and the distinctive silhouette of a sake vessel, symbolising prosperity, happiness, and good fortune.
Handcrafted from wood, the figure features a rounded, flask-shaped head with a beautifully painted smiling expression, delicate eyebrows, and softly closed eyes. Its warm reddish-brown tones contrast with a vibrant red hood and matching body, decorated with traditional floral motifs.
A particularly charming feature is the orange-and-white braided cord with decorative tassels tied around its neck, adding texture and a festive character to the piece. The lower section retains a rustic natural bark finish, creating a beautiful contrast between the polished painted surfaces and the organic texture of the wood.
With its joyful expression, unusual flask-inspired shape, and rustic craftsmanship, this Fukutokkuri Kokeshi is a wonderful example of Japanese souvenir folk art, making it a delightful collectible or a meaningful decorative gift associated with good fortune.
