A charming vintage Sōsaku Kokeshi (創作こけし) keychain / hanging charm produced by Usaburo Kokeshi (卯三郎こけし), the well-known workshop from Gunma Prefecture celebrated for its creative interpretations of traditional Japanese wooden dolls.
This miniature kokeshi depicts a sweet young girl dressed in a vivid red kimono, delicately decorated with hand-painted yellow and green floral motifs. A small fabric flower ornaments the front of her kimono, while a red bow accents her softly carved wooden hairstyle. Her tiny painted face, with rosy cheeks and fine eyelashes, gives the piece the warm and playful character associated with Usaburo's designs.
A small metal bell hangs beneath the doll, producing a gentle sound when moved. The original wooden tag marked 「卯三郎こけし」 (Usaburo Kokeshi) and red hanging cord are still attached.
Usaburo Kokeshi became especially known for expanding the possibilities of post-war creative kokeshi, combining skilled woodturning with imaginative forms, colourful decoration and approachable modern designs. Small charms such as this were often made as souvenirs or decorative accessories, making them delightful examples of everyday Japanese folk craft.
