A charming vintage Otemoyan (おてもやん) folk doll from Kyushu, inspired by one of Kumamoto’s most beloved traditional folk characters.

Otemoyan is the heroine of the famous Kumamoto folk song “Otemoyan”, a lively and humorous song that became closely associated with the city and with the cheerful spirit of local popular culture. The character is traditionally portrayed as a spirited young woman with a bright, expressive face, often wearing a kimono and vivid red accents.

This small figure has a wonderfully playful appearance, with a tilted head, large painted eyes, rosy cheeks and a tiny red mouth. Her hair is gathered into a bun and tied with a bold red ribbon, while her pale kimono is finished with broad sleeves and subtle geometric decoration.

The bright red apron-like front panel is inscribed 「おてもやん」, clearly identifying the figure. Its simplified modelling, hand-painted details and slightly rustic finish give it the warm personality typical of Japanese regional souvenir dolls and folk crafts.

Rather than aiming for formal elegance, this piece captures the friendly, humorous character of Otemoyan and the regional identity of Kumamoto and Kyushu. Such dolls were often made as omiyage, serving as small souvenirs that represented the folklore, songs and traditions of a particular place.
